A step by step guide to low maintenance plants

Indoor gardening has its fair share of difficulties, but some plants can make it even worst. If you are not blessed with a green thumb or you simply can’t dedicate enough time to your indoor garden, then you can try these easy-care plants that won’t die on you.

Indoor plants care

Light conditions – Indoor plants vary in their light requirements. Some plants prefer the strong light found next to a south-facing window and other plants thrive in the soft morning light of an east-facing window. Distance from the window will affect the light intensity and the quality

Choose the right container – It is very important to consider size, material, and even color.

Use good-quality potting soil – Good potting soil promotes healthy roots by providing good aeration and nutrition. Nurseries and garden centers carry a superb selection of packaged potting soils.

Water properly – Like all containerized plants, indoor plants need frequent, thorough watering. Don’t leave water in the catch-tray for more than a day or two. Doing so promotes root diseases. Allow the potting soil to partially dry before watering again. To verify soil moisture, stick your finger into the top 2 inches of soil. If it is dry, it’s probably time to water carefully.

If you’re potted indoor plants dry out too quickly after watering, try this simple trick for keeping the soil moist longer. When repotting, tuck a damp sponge into the bottom of the pot or container before filling with soil. It will act as a water reservoir and could help prevent a gusher if you accidentally overwater.

Fertilize and control pests -The frequent watering required by most indoor plants leaches nutrients out of the soil. These should be replaced by regular fertilization. Insects, such as Aphids, Scale and Whiteflies, can be problematic indoors. Regularly inspect your indoor plants for signs of insect pests and treat them when necessary.

Some of the low maintenance plants

Here we discuss some of the low maintenance plants are given below;

Spider Plant

The spider plant is one of the most adaptable of indoor plants and easy to grow. This spider plant can grow in a wide range of conditions and suffers from few problems, other than brown tips and grow in a soil-based, well-draining potting mix. These plants like even moisture; they don’t like to be too dry or too wet.

Keep spider plants in bright to moderate indirect sunlight. These plants do not appreciate direct, hot sunlight, which can burn their leaves, causing brown tips and spots. These plants grow fairly quickly and can easily become pot bound. And plan to repot a spider plant about every other year. Water your spider plant with distilled or purified water because they can be sensitive to the fluoride in tap water. You want the soil-plant is in to be consistently moist but not soggy.

Caring for spider plants is very easy. Provide them with bright, indirect light and they will flourish. Water them well but do not allow the spider plants to become too soggy, which can lead to root rot.

Schefflera

Schefflera plant species are tropical plants. The larger Schefflera plant features long, shiny, oval green leaves that droop gracefully from a central stalk resembling an umbrella.

Schefflera is not difficult plants to grow, as long as they receive plenty of indirect light, warmth, and humidity. In cold climates, bottom heat might be necessary. Leggy Schefflera plant can be pruned to encourage a fuller plant. Schefflera can be easy to grow, but several pests can cause trouble in your garden.

Schefflera plant prefers bright, indirect light. A Schefflera that gets leggy or floppy might not be getting enough light. Plant Schefflera in a rich, loose potting media with moist compost and you can try a well-draining sandy loam soil with an acidic to slightly alkaline pH. Avoid planting in a place where the soil becomes too wet or waterlogged.

Dracaena marginata

Dracaena marginata or Dragon tree is a low-maintenance houseplant that has few problems. Dracaena Marginata plant prefers medium light but can survive in low light. Low light slows the growth rate of new plant leaves. Dracaena Marginata plant should not receive direct sunlight, it burns the leaves. Dragon trees require moderate to bright indirect sunlight. Brown spots on the leaves generally indicate the plant is getting too much light.

Daylily

Daylilies are the perfect choice for indoor low maintenance plants. These robust and adaptable perennials can survive drought, flooding, and salt and will thrive perfectly in the garden for years with little or no care. The plants will create an abundance of flower buds in yellow, purple, red and orange shades. Daylilies best when planted in full sun (6 hours/day), on moist, yet well-drained soil.

Chinese evergreen

Chinese evergreen plants are rich green plants patterned with silvery-white patches. This plant grows best in well-drained, moist soil and medium lighting, either natural or artificial. Chinese Evergreens need fertilization at least twice a year and need to be watered just once or twice a week. These plants are known for their air filtering abilities that help keep indoor air pollution-free.

This plant is known to adapt to indoor conditions. This plant prefers indirect sunlight and can remain dry for days before rewatering and it is hard to kill and almost foolproof. This plant grows beautiful, full, bushy leaves with plain green, speckled or blotched patterns.

Jade plant

This is my one of the low maintenance plants to grow as a Indoor pant. Jade plant care is very easy and simple. Jade plant has a luscious look with thick, glossy leaves. It is one of the most popular houseplants. Jade needs plenty to have light so put it in a bright spot. The watering jade plant is the tricky part. It will develop root rot with too much water; too little water will cause the plant leaves to drop. You can allow the garden soil to dry before watering, just not too long.

Shasta daisy

Shasta daisy flowers give perky summer blooms, offering the look of the traditional daisy along with evergreen foliage that lasts year-round in many locations. Shasta Daisies are very easy to grow. This classic perennial plant has large white blooms that last until early fall. Shasta daisy plants prefer well-drained soil.  Choose from different varieties for different heights short ones are perfect for borders and tall ones make a dramatic backdrop. Good drainage is very important for the performance of the Shasta daisy as well. While Shasta daisy plants will take light shade, as opposed to a full sun location, the plants won’t tolerate soggy roots or standing water. Provide good drainage several inches down in the soil. Good drainage when planting these plants can be aided along by adding organic material to the soil before planting.

Coneflower

Coneflower plant is a mid-summer bloomer that’s a great cut flower. There are several different varieties in many colors. Coneflower plant is deer resistant and attracts butterflies. Coneflowers are tolerant of poor soil conditions, but they perform best in soil that’s rich so mix in the organic matter if needed. Coneflower plants prefer well-drained soil and full sun for best bloom.

These beautiful flowers have become a garden staple because of their easy maintenance and bright blooms. These Coneflowers are relatively tolerant of drought and do well in both full sun and partial shade. These are the ideal companion plants, attracting birds, bees and butterflies. You can pick from a wide range of bright and colorful blooms, including pink, yellow, crimson, orange and white.

Hardy Hibiscus

Hardy hibiscus plant loves full sun and attracts both hummingbirds and butterflies. This plant starts blooming late in the summer producing huge flowers in shades of red, pink or white. The plant dies back in the winter and is late to break dormancy. Hardy hibiscus plants like moist soils, so keep plants well watered and mulched with bark mulch to prevent weeds from crowding them and maintain the soil moisture. Fertilize the plant in spring with a layer of compost.

Lucky Bamboo

This is my one of the favourite plants to grow as a indoor plant with low maintenance. The lucky bamboo plant is an easy plant to care for which makes it great for offices and homes alike. It is happy growing in soil or water but has the longest life when grown in soil. The lucky bamboo plant requires moderate or indirect sunlight. Direct sunlight will scorch the leaves, so avoid placing the plant in front of a bright window. Lucky bamboo does not need much water to survive, but it can be grown in water as well. If you choose to grow bamboo in water, make sure the roots always stay covered with water. Replenish your lucky bamboo with fresh water every 7 to 10 days to keep it happy and healthy.

English Ivy

English Ivy prefers an evenly moist environment. Water the plants freely during growth and keep English Ivy houseplants moist in the winter. Spraying an English Ivy plant with soft water weekly will help prevent spider mites from infesting the plants.

English Ivy plant is a very common houseplant. The evergreen, woody-stemmed plants are often seen trailing across gardens, climbing walls, or encouraged as climbers along a supporting pole inside homes for a beautiful and decorative houseplant accent. Basic care for English Ivy houseplants is very easy. The plants need an evenly moist and relatively humid environment, consistent temperature, and occasional pruning.

Coreopsis

Coreopsis plant has sunny daisy-like flowers that bloom in a variety of colors, such as yellow, pink, red or bi-color. The flowers blossom early summer to midsummer and deadheading spent blooms will increase bloom time. Most coreopsis varieties are easy to grow and are not particular about soil quality or soil pH. They like well-draining soils, such as the thread leaf coreopsis, will tolerate dry, rocky soils.

Coreopsis plants will need regular water when first planted until they are established. After that, they are drought tolerant and water the plants deeply at least once a week to help new roots grow down deeply.

Areca Palm

Areca palm species that don’t require frequent trimming, they are easy to take care of. Caring requirements for Areca Palm plants include ample, bright lighting, high humidity, and warm atmospheres. These plants thrive best in peat-based soil with excellent drainage since water-logged soil can cause their leaves to wilt. Watering this Areca palm plant once a day and keeping them away from cold drafts lay the foundation for their well-being.

Catmint

Catmint herb is very easy to grow. Catmint plants can be grown in sun or partial shade with average, well-draining soil. They are even heat and drought tolerant and making them excellent plants for dry garden areas. Catmint plant is most often grown by seed or through division. Plant in sun to part shade, it will attract hummingbirds and butterflies. Catmint plant is an aromatic herb that is commonly grown in the garden.

Money Plant

This is one of the most popular Indian plants, which is very easy to grow in both soil and water. The money plant improves air quality in the house and according to feng shui principles; it creates a harmonious environment and brings in prosperity. And money plants prefer bright, indirect light and moderate-to-high humidity. Direct sunlight can lead to leaf-scorching, but the Money plants can do relatively well in low light. Money plants look like they would be super fussy, but they’re pretty easy to grow houseplants.

Dumb Cane

There are many varieties of the dumb cane plant and it grows broad and tall with unique patterns on every leaf. This dumb cane plant does well in warm environments, so it’s best to avoid placing it near windows. Dumb cane plants can also thrive in indirect sunlight and can be lightly watered enough to keep the soil moist.

Overwatering is a common problem with many houseplants and the dumb cane houseplant is no exception. Plant the dumb cane plant in well-draining soil and water lightly, keeping the soil consistently moist, but not soggy. Check the soil to make sure it is dry an inch down before watering the dumb cane plant.
