Types of vegetable gardens

In general, most vegetables divided into two categories. They are Cool-season crops and Warm-season crops.

Cool-season crops

You can generally sow cool-season crops directly in the garden as soon as the soil is workable and the garden beds are prepared. Most of these cool-season vegetables are easy to grow.

Some cool-season crops are Onions, Lettuce, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Peas, Radishes, Turnips, and Spinach.

Cool-season vegetables are further categorized as hardy and half-hardy.

Hardy vegetables are the coldest tolerant and they can be planted 2 to 4 weeks before the date of the average last frost in spring; their seeds will germinate in cold soil and seedlings can endure short freezes. Some of the hardy vegetables include asparagus, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, chives, collards, corn salad, garlic, horseradish, kale, kohlrabi, leeks, mustard, onions, parsley, peas, radishes, rhubarb, rutabaga, spinach, and turnips.

Half-hardy or semi-hardy vegetables grow when the minimum temperature range is between 40ºF and 50ºF (5-10ºC). Half-hardy vegetables contain beets, carrots, cauliflower, celery, celeriac, chard, Chinese cabbage, chicory, globe artichokes, endive, lettuce, parsnips, potatoes, salsify, sorrel, and hardy herbs.

Warm-season crops

Warm-season crops are very easily damaged by frost, and their seeds do not germinate well in cold soil. Some of the warm-season crops are Tomatoes, Peppers, Eggplants, Celery, and Okra.

Warm-season crops are further categorized as tender and very-tender.

Tender vegetables prefer temperature range between 70º and 95ºF (21-35ºC) and require daytime temperatures of 60ºF (15ºC) or greater to thrive. Some of the Tender vegetables include beans, sweet corn, cucumbers, spinach, summer squash, and tomatoes.

Very-tender vegetables need daytime temperatures consistently warmer than 55ºF (13ºC). Some of the Very-tender vegetables include lima beans, cantaloupe, eggplant, muskmelon, okra, peppers, pumpkins, winter squash, sweet potatoes, and watermelon.

Vegetable gardening calendar month by month

List of month by month growing indoor vegetables in India are given below;

Vegetable gardening in January
  • Several early vegetables can be started off indoor gardening in January, such as French beans for forcing, early maturing cauliflowers and onions. Lettuce sown now can provide a late spring crop.
  • Plant the amount of every vegetable to be planted, including enough to can and freeze.
  • Buy enough quality seed for 2 or 3 plantings to lengthen the season of production.
  • Apply lime, sulfur, and fertilizer according to the soil-test results and different vegetable requirements.
  • If you have promised to make a green start to the year, January is the correct time to get started. Start with a vegetable garden and produce these vegetables to reap a rich harvest in the coming months.

Here is a list of the vegetables to grow in January in India;

Brussels sprouts, spinach beet, brinjals, okra, cucumbers, capsicums, bottle gourd and bitter gourd, spring potato, European radish, cabbages, and savoys

Vegetable gardening in February
  • February is the best time for digging, liberal manuring and cleaning up. Many weeds, particularly groundsel, will now be coming into flower, and if allowed to seed will make enormous work for you later on.
  • If you have heavy clay soil, finish any deep digging as soon as possible, that late frosts can break it down into a workable tilth in readiness for sowing and planting. There is no need to dig now if the soil is light and sandy.
  • Try to complete all digging this month so the soil has a chance to benefit from frost breaking it up.
  • Cover areas of soil to be sown with vegetable seeds next month with black plastic or fleece to warm it and prevent it from getting too wet.

Here is a list of the best vegetables to grow in February in India;

Broad beans, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, eggplant, lettuce, onions, parsnips, peas, bottle gourd, pumpkin, summer squash, bitter gourd, European radish, leaf beet, pointed gourd, chili, and tomato.

Vegetable gardening in March
  • Finish all digging, unless you have a light and sandy soil. Light soils can generally be dug, and compost incorporated, just before cultivation. Do not apply compost or manure to the garden that is intended for root vegetables as this will encourage the roots to ‘fang’, producing two or more growing points per root.
  • March is the great season for garden work seedbeds that must be carefully prepared and your vegetable gardens cleaned up ready for the growing season. Where early-sown crops have failed, dig them back into the garden soil and sow again.
  • The first batch of the year should soon be ready for harvesting in March. This may well contain spinach beet and possibly purple sprouting broccoli.
