When it comes to the propagation of dragon fruit plants, these plants can be grown from the seed and stem cuttings. However, growing dragon fruit from seed is not viable and reliable; it may take 7 to 8 years to get to the fruiting stage if they are grown from seed. The best method is to grow from healthy stem cuttings. You better get these saplings from certified fruit nurseries or procure from any horticulture department.

Instead of buying saplings from a nursery or any other place, if you have any existing dragon fruit orchard, you can prepare stem cuttings on your own. In stem cutting propagation, you can procure 14 to 40 cm healthy stems and make a slanted cut at the base of the stem. To avoid any fungal disease, make sure to treat these stems with fungicide. Once treated, you must allow the stem to dry for a week in a dry and shaded surface. Now you can use root hormone and plant directly in the field. If you are growing dragon fruit in pots or containers, you can use the same procedure for stem propagation.

The pits should be dug with a measurement of  2 feet wide 2 feet long and 1 foot deep. Before you get the saplings, be ready with land preparation, poles and pits. When you are ready to plant, you must apply each pit with 25 kg of farm yard manure such as cow dung and 1.5 kg of Neem cake powder.

Irrigation requirement in commercial dragon fruit cultivation

However, for better plant growth and fruiting, irrigation should be giving at the time transplantation, flowering and fruiting stage. The number of irrigations depends on soil type, variety of plants, and climatic conditions. Usually, it may require 2 to 3 irrigation in a week in dry conditions and  1 to 2 irrigations in winter conditions, and there won’t be any requirement in rainy season.
