The roots float directly into a pool of water about 1 foot in depth. Then, there are no media to capture and process the solid wastes, filtration techniques must be built into the design. This necessitates more advanced aquaculture methods and system requirements, leading to higher upfront costs. DWC uses a raft with foam, which floats on a fish effluent water channel, which is filled. The plants filter this water and plants are put in the raft holes. This method is used to grow salads and it is used in large commercial locations.
